Location: Jesus was at the house of one of the chief Pharisees, eating on the sabbath day. (Luke 14:1)
One of the men who sat, eating with Jesus: Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered with a parable.
A certain man planned a great supper and invited many guests.
The man sent out his servant at supper time.
Servant (to those who were invited): Come, everything is ready.
They all began to make excuses.
The first: I have bought a piece of land, and I have to go and see it. Please have me excused.
Another: I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I’m going to test them. Please have me excused.
Another: I have married a wife, and I can’t come.
So the servant returned and explained these things to his lord.
Then the master of the house became angry.
The master (to his servant): Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, crippled, lame, and blind.
The servant did as the master told him.
The servant: Lord, it has been done as you have commanded, and yet there is still room.
The master: Go outside the city into the highways and hedges and compel all those you find to come, that my house may be filled. None of those men who were originally invited shall taste of my supper.
