Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat on the sabbath day.
He noticed how the invited guests chose the highest rooms, the places of honor.
Jesus told them a parable.
When you are invited to a wedding by any man, do not sit down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you has been invited;
And he that invited you comes and says to you, Give this man your place; and you begin to take the lowest room with shame.
But when you are invited to the wedding, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher: then you shall be honored in the presence of all them that sit with you.
Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.
