Matthew 13:3-8

(Also found in Mark 4:1-9 and Luke 8:4-8)

Jesus spoke many things to the multitude in parables.

Jesus: A sower went out to sow. When he sowed,

• Some seeds fell by the way side, and the birds came and devoured them up.

• Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much soil: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of soul. When the sun was up, the tender plants were scorched; and they withered away because they did not have roots.

• Some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them.

• Others fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

The Sower Explained

Matthew 13:18-23 (Also found in Mark 4:13-20 and Luke 8:11-15)

Jesus (to his disciples): Hear the parable of the sower.

  • When any one hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, then the wicked one, comes and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the way side.
  • He who received the seed into stony places, the same is he who hears the word, and soon receives it with joy. But he has no root in himself, so he endures for a while; but when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended.
  • He who received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
  • But he who received seed into the good ground is he that hears the word, and understands it. He bears fruit and brings forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
